Bass Guitar neck numbers and letters?

I just started learning the bass guitar and had alook at some tabs online, I see it says a number along a line. I get that the four lines are the four strings, but which string is which line, and where do the numbers start on the bass? is number 1 the nearest line to the bodyt or the nearest line to the top?
