Why do some Christians try to re-interpret the Bible to make it mesh with science?

Why bother refuting it on a literal level? Isn't it obvious enough that it's full of hatred, murder weirdos and despicable actions on a any level? Allegory or not, it still isn't a "message of peace" as some claim. That's obvious enough from Genesis alone, the rest of the book just proves the point.
